From Bloomberg:-
$200 Handbags

Shoppers will be restrained, which will result in the number of U.S. malls falling by at least a fifth and weak chains succumbing to bankruptcy, said retail analyst Patricia Edwards, founder of Storehouse Partners LLC in Bellevue, Washington.

In preparation, Coach Inc. has begun to “engineer” its collections so at least half its handbags fall into the $200 to $300 range, compared with 30 percent previously, meaning an average reduction in price of 10 percent to 15 percent, CEO Lew Frankfort said.

Long after the economic contraction has ended, “consumers will spend less on luxury goods than they did before the recession began,” Frankfort said at an April 28 investors’ conference. “We are adapting to what will be a new normal.”

Yesterday, I took a foreign visitor to the LouiseVuitton, Prada, Chanel, TOD's stores in Orchard. Mainland Chinese buyers were falling over themselves to buy up LV and Prada bags  ;) Well, the Chinese well-heeled are looking at the USD2,000 range.

A lot of them are also selling them back home as the price difference can be between 30% to 40% due to the high taxes in China.

Having said that, there's alot of money slushing around too, so some of those money would definitely end up in the pockets of the spouses and girl-friends ...

Hi K
U're welcome. Glad to be of any help
The ones I met at Prada look like 'kept' women but those at LV are tourists on group tours. I'm happy that they are oiling the economy.

It's Good to Know: Hot Recession Sellers

So... Louis Vuitton handbags haven't been flying off the shelves lately. Vacations are being cancelled. And many people are opting to get their cars fixed instead of buying new ones.

What IS selling? It's not all Spam and dollar-store deals. Consumer-spending watchers say the trend is toward "smaller-scale" luxuries. People still want to indulge... but on a budget. Here are some of the products that have gotten a boost in recent months:

Chocolate
Wine (more recent vintages)
Running shoes
Cosmetics
Fishing equipment
Gardening seeds
Tanning products
Condoms
Memberships to dating websites
