Delivery rider loses his heart and nearly RM64,000 to love scam

By REMAR NORDIN

The victim befriended a woman known as “Leong Kin Seng” through a social media platform in early August last year.

After the pair had communicated for some 20 days, the woman asked the victim for money, claiming that she needed to treat her ailing mother – failing which, she would end their relationship.

“Fooled by her pleas, the victim transferred the money to her in 16 transactions between Aug 25 and Nov 16,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Housewife loses RM160,000 to non-existent investment scam

The 67-year-old victim was initially drawn to the scheme after encountering an advertisement on YouTube on Dec 8, 2024. He explained that the woman was promised lucrative returns, including daily profits, for her investments. Enticed by the offer, the victim transferred a total of RM160,000 from her savings, in three transactions to two bank accounts provided by the suspect.

In a separate case, Yahaya said a 57-year-old housewife claimed to have lost RM137,500 after allegedly being hypnotised by three unknown women, who approached her on Tuesday and inquired about the home address of an unfamiliar individual. He explained that the victim was then coerced into handing over her jewellery and withdrawing her savings from both her home and the bank. The woman only realised she may have been hypnotised after returning home”.

By NELSON BENJAMIN

The man in his 60s, who wanted to be known only as Tee, said he had used up almost all his savings from the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) totalling RM900,000 and borrowed almost another RM480,000 to invest a total of about RM1.38mil in supposed initial public offerings (IPOs) in China.

He claimed that his investments in the platform had actually increased in value to RM4.7mil, but he was unable to make any withdrawal.

Tee also said he tried to make a withdrawal of RM2.7mil several days ago, but the system did not process it.

“They (investment company representatives) asked me to pay another RM650,000 cash as ‘profit-sharing’ if I wanted to withdraw the RM4.7mil.

Chinese national caught trying to steal another passenger's credit card on KL-Penang flight

Police also believe that the suspect is part of a syndicate linked to the arrest of three other Chinese nationals involved in thefts aboard commercial flights in November and December last year.

The three previous cases involved suspects from Hunan, China, aged between 51 and 61, who were caught in the act of stealing and have been charged.

Sazalee also advised commercial flight passengers to take preventive measures by keeping bags containing cash or valuables in the storage areas closest to their seats.
