You Are Enough

The ground of renunciation is realizing that we already have exactly what we need, that what we have already is good.

How should we welcome Festivals, in its true spirit?

You would have celebrated many festivals in your life.

Certain traditional practices go with every festival, such as having a sacred bath, wearing new clothes, cleaning the house and decorating it with buntings of green leaves.

Greatness lies in purifying our thoughts not merely the transient human body.

The significance of a festival, does not lie in wearing new clothes but in cultivating new and noble thoughts.

The house should be decorated not merely with the buntings of green leaves but with buntings of love.

Share your love with everyone who visits your house. Only then would we be celebrating the festival in its true spirit.

Today, humanity is stricken with fear and restlessness. Courage and strength are on the decline because of unsacred thoughts and wicked feelings.

Your enemies are not outside. Bad thoughts are your worst enemies and noble thoughts based on Truth are your best friends!

- Divine Discourse Mar 18, 1999.

True Spiritual practices is cultivating noble thoughts and undertaking virtuous deeds.

At times, we are discouraged with what we see around and earnestly feel that sincere devotion, peace and truth, should grow in the world. What should we do?

Prayers of the noble and virtuous, act as an invitation even for the advent of the Divine. In the external world, when common people need conveniences, they approach authorities and request them.

Similarly, in the internal realm, when there is no possibility of achieving and acquiring devotion, charity, peace and truth, noble and virtuous, who yearn for these to grow, pray to the Divine.

Then, listening to their prayers, He Himself comes and showers His grace. This fact is well known.

Many would have read these events in the Scriptures. Hence, prayers should be offered again and again for the fulfilment of this task, without becoming desperate and giving up, if they don’t yield results immediately.

- Prema Vahini, Ch 70.

Prayer must come from the depths of feeling; the Divine looks for sincerity of feeling,
not outward pomp.

How to Respond to Anger

If you are angry and you meditate to get rid of your anger, you will only frustrate yourself. Meditate because you are angry, not to eliminate it.

In difficult times, when discontent fear and worry is all over the world, what should we do?

The roads laid out by holy people may need repairs now and then, either by those who travel through it or by those who claim authority over it.

It is for the sake of such repairs, that the Divine occasionally sends some authorised individuals, sages, and divine people.

Through their good teachings, the path opened by the holy-people of the past, is again made clear and smooth. Thus, when the Divine will, the needs of spiritual seekers, and the teachings of great persons produce their combined effect, the happiness of the world will be assured and undiminished.

If all humanity prays at one time for unrest, injustice, disorder, and falsehood to be transformed into peace, truth, love, and mutual service, things will certainly become better.

There is no other way out. Worrying is fruitless. This is no occasion for despair.

It is against the essential nature of people to plead weakness. Give up the search for all other means!

Resort to prayer, mutual love, respect and service. Do not delay any longer; you will soon acquire contentment and joy!

- Prema Vahini, Ch 70.

Prayer alone makes life happy, harmonious and worth living in this universe.

Some of us like to pray, while others choose the path of service. Which is better and why? When does service become a worthy offering to the Divine?

People say that service to humanity is service to the Divine. That is a true statement. But mere repetition of the slogan is useless, if service is done without faith in the divinity of people and with an eye on name and fame and the fruits of one’s action.

Whatever actions one undertakes, if one constantly has as companion, the contemplation of the Divine and if one has faith in the essential divinity of people, then the statement is justified.

Without thoughts of the Divine, how can service to the Divine originate? All such talk is mere show. I won’t agree to that.

Instead, whatever is done with the Divine in mind, along the path of truth and according to aspects of Righteousness, has to be considered as selfless service to the Divine

In fact, those who are immersed in the uninterrupted contemplation of the Divine need not do any other task at all. The fruit of their prayer itself can make the world holy.

However, all can’t be thus engaged, so try to prepare for that stage by purifying the mind and diminishing desires.

- Prema Vahini, Ch 71.

Service brings human beings closer to each other and promotes affection and friendship.

Getting Along with People Who Bother You

A Buddhist practices nonattachment to views.

If we human beings are going to stick around on this earth, we need to learn to get along not just with the people who share our views but also, and more to the point, with the people who get our goat.

And remember—we get their goat, too.

Forgive Yourself for Failing

Falling down is what we humans do.

If we can acknowledge that fact, judgment softens and we allow the world to be as it is, forgiving ourselves and others for our humanity.

Why should we persist in our Spiritual Practices until we experience seeing oneness around?

To grasp that service to the Divine and service to mankind, is one and the same, is dependent on your destiny, past actions and spiritual discipline.

Until you grasp this unity, do meditation and repeat the name, so that your mind becomes free from the waves of thoughts and is filled with the divine form.

Also, carry out deeds for the well-being of others. Devote your time to the service of the world, regardless of the results thereof. Thus, you will become blessed.

Otherwise, though the body may be inactive, your mind will be very busy, committing acts on its own. People with such minds fall prey to fate (karma) in spite of their not doing anything!

When a person has the mind fixed on contemplation of the Divine and the pursuit of truth, though the body and senses do acts that are of service to the world, they won’t be affected by them;

Though they do actions (karma), they are still non-doers of action. The lesson of the Scriptures is embedded in this.

- Prema Vahini, Ch 72.

The heart of the person who doesn’t strive to cultivate the mind with holy thoughts is the paradise of evil and wickedness. When the heart is pure, the light of wisdom shines.

What is the one prayer that every devotee must make? When is the best time to pray to the Divine?

There are no limitations of time or space, for the establishment of oneself in the contemplation of the Omnipresent Divine.

There is nothing like a holy place or a special time for this.

Wherever the mind revels in contemplation of the Divine, that is the holy place! Whenever it does so, that is the auspicious moment! Then and there, one must meditate on the Divine.

The world can achieve prosperity through disciplined souls, whose hearts are pure and who represent the salt of the earth.

In the attempt to promote the welfare of the world, from this very minute, each and everyone should pray for the advent of such divine personages, and deserve the blessings of the great, and should try to forget the sufferings of the day.

- Prema Vahini, Ch 73.

To resurrect love and compassion, you must kill jealousy and selfishness and purify your hearts.
