What is the need of the hour for individual, societal and universal development?

Life must be spent in accumulating and safeguarding virtue, not riches.

Listen and ruminate over the stories of the great moral heroes of the past, so that their ideals may be imprinted on your hearts.

Nowadays, virtue is becoming rare in the individual, family, society and community, as well as in all fields, be it economic, political and even 'spiritual’.

So also, there is a decline in discipline, which is the soil on which virtue grows. Respect one and all. Unless each one is respected, whatever be their status, economic condition, or spiritual development, there can be no peace and happiness in life.

This respect can be aroused only by the conviction that the same Atma (Self) that is in you is playing the role of the other person.

See that Atma in others, feel that they too have hunger, thirst, yearning and desires as you have; develop sympathy and the anxiety to serve and be useful.

- Divine Discourse, Feb 22, 1968.

Make your homes the seat of virtue, morality and love. Control anger and greed.

What should we endeavour to achieve through our life and what must we hold on to realise it?

The cow transforms grass and gruel into sweet strength-giving milk and gives it away in plenty to its master.

Develop that quality, that power to transform the food you consume into sweet thoughts, words and deeds of compassion for all.

When your heart is filled with virtues, the Divine will shower His Grace abundantly.

Without steadfastness and depth of faith, none can receive Grace. Endeavour to earn Grace by observing the discipline to follow.

Give up your old worldly ways of earning and spending, saving and accumulating with greed, lust, malice and pride.

Do not waste time in idle gossip. Talk softly and sweetly, and talk as little as possible.

Serve all as brothers and sisters adoring the Divine in them. Engage in Spiritual Practices; move every step as befits a person striving to realise Him.

– Divine Discourse, Jan 11, 1968.

Practice spiritual practices relentlessly, to discipline your mind and to develop your moral and mental strength.

What should be the first thought every morning, to lead a life filled with love, peace and joy?

Every morning ask yourself this question: "What is the grand victory I must strive for in this life, for which these struggles are preparing me?

Remind yourself that your body is the chariot, intellect is the charioteer, desires are the roads which you tread drawn by the rope of sensual attachments, and liberation is the goal; the Divine Self within should be your Guide and Goal.

If you yearn to escape the consequences of birth and death, cleanse your mind so effectively that it is nearly eliminated!

This is possible only when you identify yourself with the Indweller within you, rather than with the body!

Your body is the casket of the Inner Self, earned as a reward for one’s activities of mind and body.

When you live in the consciousness of the omnipresent Divine, you live in love - love surging within and through you, to everyone around you. You will naturally experience love, peace and joy, always!

– Divine Discourse, Jan 13, 1969.

Many people yearn for joy, but they accept as genuine, the counterfeit joy given by the senses!

At times even though we pray for several hours, it feels empty and there is dissatisfaction. Why?

Millions recite the Divine’s Name, but few have steady faith! Fewer seek the bliss that contemplation on the glory of the Divine within, the Atma, can confer.

Some people complain that recitation has not cured their pain, grief or greed! It is because they mechanically recite prayers and meditate out of habit or for social conformity or to gain reputation for religiousness!

When people who have learnt the precious scriptures revealing the science of the Self, do not put into practice what they repeat orally and have no faith in the assertions, what profit can they get from it?

The canker of doubt has undermined their reverential attitude to the scripture. They devalue the scriptures into money-or-fame-earning devices, and when they do not get money or fame through them, they are disappointed.

They envy those who follow secular avocations. But if they only develop faith, scriptures themselves will foster them and ensure for them a happy and contented life.

– Divine Discourse, Feb 23, 1968.

You worship with faith and you receive Grace. Faith results in Grace, without your being aware of it.

What is the need of the hour for individual upliftment?

Your mind is too full of the world and your stomach demands too much of your time and energy.

Desires and wants are multiplying faster than your capacity to satisfy them, and your dreams are far too fanciful, leading you into false victories and absurd adventures.

Engrossed in the analysis of the material world, you have lost all sense of spirit, sweetness and sublimity.

Under this new dispensation, truth is yet another word in the dictionary. Compassion is reduced to a meaningless travesty. People lack self-confidence.

Even at the slightest provocation, you are rapidly transformed into a wild and vicious beast. Humility, patience, reverence - these are as invalid as a flameless lamp in the far distance.

The only hope you have in today’s dreadful darkness is the name of the Divine. That is the raft which will take you across this stormy sea, darkened by hate and fear, and churned by anxiety and terror. Take it with all earnestness and steadfast faith.

- Divine Discourse, Feb 26, 1968.

Make your homes the seat of virtue, morality and love. Control anger and greed.

What is one thing we must be wary of as we continue our Spiritual Practices?

Spiritual striving will reveal the true identity of the Omnipresent Divine Self. But be careful; Spritual Practices can foster even pride and envy as a byproduct of progress.

You calculate how much or how long you have done Spiritual Practices and are tempted to look down on another, whose record is less.

You are proud that you have recited or written the name of Divine ten million times; you talk about it whenever you get the chance so that others may admire your faith and fortitude.

But it is not the millions that count; what matters is the purity of mind that results from genuine concentration on the Name of the Divine.

Your Spiritual Practices must not be like carrying water in a cane basket! You get no water however often or long you walk. Each vice is a hole in the cane basket.

Keep the heart pure and whole. You must also carefully cleanse from your heart malice, greed, hate and anger.

– Divine Discourse, Jan 13, 1969.

If there is no transformation of the heart, of what avail are spiritual practices

What are the measures of progress in the spiritual path?

Ideas of superiority and inferiority arise only in a heart corrupted by egoism.

If someone argues that they are superior and their path to worship is holier, it is proof that they missed the very core of faith.

Spiritual efforts must reveal the unity in all creation.

Ask yourself this: When you rise after meditation, do you see everyone in a clearer light, as endowed with Divinity? Do you love more, do you talk less, do you serve others more earnestly? These are the signs of success in spiritual practices.

Your progress must be authenticated by your character and behaviour. Even a boulder will, through the action of sun, rain, heat and cold, disintegrate into mud and become food for a tree.

Spiritual efforts must transmute your attitude towards beings and things; else it is a hoax, a waste of your time! Remember, even the hardest of hearts can be softened and Divine will sprout therein – so, do not give up!

– Divine Discourse, Jan 13, 1969.

Believe that the Divine resides in all beings. Speak such words as would spread goodness, truth and beauty.
