‘The worst is yet to come’: Experts say a global bear market is just getting started

by Yen Nee Lee

KEY POINTS

Volatility on Wall Street has led shares worldwide on a wild ride in recent months, resulting in a number of stock markets dipping into bear territory — typically defined as 20 percent or more off a recent peak.

That’s set to worsen in the new year, experts told CNBC on Monday, pointing to risks including the Federal Reserve likely raising interest rates further and mounting concerns about a global economic slowdown.

“I think the worst is yet to come next year, we’re still in the first half of a global equity bear market with more to come next year,” said Mark Jolley, global strategist at CCB International Securities.

BlackRock, Capital Group and Pimco Warn of 2019 Risks

by John Gittelsohn and Charles Stein

Be a stock picker rather than buying the index.

Kristina Hooper - Invesco Ltd., chief global market strategist

Buy emerging-market equities, tech stocks, global dividend-paying stocks and alternative assets, such as real estate, private equity and commodities -- especially gold.

Sell or decrease U.S. equities, consumer discretionary stocks in particular.

Jeffrey Gundlach: DoubleLine Capital, CIO and CEO

Avoid U.S. stocks and corporate debt, and steer clear of long-term Treasuries as rates are likely to resume rising amid swelling U.S. deficits.

Best bets are high-quality, low-duration, low-volatility bond funds.

“This is a capital preservation environment”.

Steer away from areas with limited upside but hefty downside risk, such as European stocks.

Omar Aguilar: Charles Schwab Investment Management, CIO of equities and multi-asset strategies

Avoid or sell small-cap equities, high-yield bonds and securities with high debt relative to assets, and/or leveraged balanced sheets.

Invest in securities that have sustainability in earnings growth and dividends, in sectors such as health care, consumer discretionary and regional banks.
