The Market Has Never Done This Before

By Tyler Durden

It’s now 13 days since we had a larger move using daily data back to 1927.

It is now 73 trading days since the S&P increased by more than 1% in any one day.

This is just another piece of evidence for Canaccord’s thesis that traders are not complacent, they are simply “paralyzed.”

SENTIMENT INDICATORS

VIX: 15.51; -0.53
VXN: 17.77; -1.29
VXO: 12.87; -0.99

Put/Call Ratio (CBOE): 0.97; +0.04

Bulls and Bears: The two week fade appears to have caught up with some of the bulls as the number fell below 60 for the first time in three weeks.

Reached levels that call for more serious corrections. Perhaps NASDAQ and SP500 are trying, but will the Powers let them fall?

Bulls: 57.5 versus 60.0
Bears: 17.0 versus 16.2

Bearish sentiment will push market higher: Strategist Jim Paulsen

Investors are pulling billions from the stock market, and for widely followed strategist Jim Paulsen, that's a good sign.

"I really like the fact that there is quite a bit of bearish indication among most out there, or at least a high degree of caution, which I think allows this market a foundation to continue to climb a wall of worry," he said.

Michael Jones, chief investment officer at RiverFront Investment Group, agrees this kind of sentiment is what gives the bull market some additional life.

VXN: 14.1; -0.23
VXO: 8.94; -0.32

Put/Call Ratio (CBOE): 0.83; -0.23

Bulls and Bears: Bulls are off 8 points in four weeks after rallying back to 60 for two weeks. Was the recent selloff the response to those high readings? If that was it, that is a break from history.

VXN: 16.07; +0.67
VXO: 10.76; +0.92

Bulls and Bears: After the sharp decline in bulls the past month, they held steady. Bears as well. A standoff, at least for now. A bounce then a pause. The sides are confused, and that is not bad.

Stocks Are Flashing a MAJOR Sell Signal

On prior occasions when the indicator has been one standard deviation above the four-year rolling average, the S&P 500 has returned less than 1% over the following 12 months, and actually declined almost half of the time.

The firm’s proprietary “Sell Side Indicator” — which monitors investor overexuberance — is now nearly two standard deviations above its four-year average.

“It has historically been a bullish signal when Wall Street was extremely bearish, and vice versa.”
