What's the Difference Between Strategic and Tactical Asset Allocation?

by Barbara Friedberg

Strategic asset allocation is for the long view, possibly until your risk tolerance levels change.

Tactical asset allocation is driven by market events.

Why understanding asset allocation is key

Determining the mix of investment types is one of your most important tasks as an investor.

How you allocate assets should be based upon your unique financial goals, time horizon and risk tolerance.

Regardless of whether you need a portfolio that is more concentrated in stocks or bonds, you should consider diversifying within each asset class, too.

Know the Art and Science of Asset Allocation

by Barbara Friedberg

Strategic investment allocation can dampen losses, not eliminate them.

When the market goes down, so will your investments. But with greater diversification your portfolio losses will be tempered, you'll remain calmer and be able to buy assets on sale after a market drop.

There’s a wave of selling estimated to be in the billions that’s about to hit the stock market

by Patti Domm

KEY POINTS

The final day of June is a week away, and Wall Street is already speculating that there’s the potential some asset allocators, like pension funds, could take the big gains from the stock market and move them into bonds.

There’s a wide range of views about how much selling could hit the stock market, but some strategists say the resulting market move may not be that big after all because of prior selling and action in the derivatives market.

The amount of pension fund rebalancing is estimated in a wide range, with some estimates from $35 billion to $76 billion.

Wells Fargo estimates the rebalance into bonds could be the largest in six years.

Strategic vs. Tactical Asset Allocation

by Sarah Sharkey

A tactical asset allocation strategy takes a more active approach that responds to changing market conditions. Although you may have a long-term strategy in place, you regularly make changes along the way for short-term returns.

Stock Allocation Rules

By DANIEL KURT

KEY TAKEAWAYS

1. Reducing the amount of risk as you get older is one of the basic principles of investing.

2. One of the common rules of asset allocation is to invest a percentage in stocks that is equal to 100 minus your age.

3. People are living longer, which means there may be a need to change this rule, especially since many fixed-income investments offer lower yields.

4. It may make sense to hold a percentage of stocks equal to 110 or 120 minus your age.

5. You should consider other factors in your investment strategy, including the age at which you want to retire and the amount of money you think you'll need.

What is asset allocation? How to build the best portfolio for your investment goals

by Ivana Pino

A few factors you may want to consider when choosing assets to invest in and determining how much to invest:
1. Your risk tolerance
2. Your investment goals and time horizon
3. Liquidity

“Rebalancing your portfolio on a regular schedule can help enforce the discipline of buying low and selling high”.

“Rebalancing at least once a year is a good strategy to make sure that your portfolio is on track and in line with your goals.”

Real-money funds dump US$100 bil of stocks on rebalancing

Bonds are the likely beneficiaries of sales by sovereign wealth, pension and balanced mutual funds looking to replenish their fixed-income holdings.

Sovereign wealth funds could be done selling roughly US$29 billion in equities while US defined benefit pension plans would need to shift up to US$70 billion from equities to bonds.

The adjustments away from equities will compound some US$30 billion of forced sales expected by trend-chasing quants following a slide that’s taken the S&P 500 down about 6% from its November high.

Japan’s US$1.6 trillion GPIF, the world’s largest pension fund, would have to sell US$17 billion of equities to get back to its target asset allocation.

The US$1.3 trillion Norwegian Oil Fund could move US$12 billion from stocks to bonds.
