Billionaire brokerage CEO: There's an 'enormous pile of cash' waiting to come back into the market

Interactive Brokers founder Tom Peterffy says he may soon change his bearish tune about the stock market.

The billionaire says his firm's customers have more than $50 billion of idle cash in their accounts, calling it a historic high.

"That enormous pile of cash is there waiting to come into the market," Peterffy says.

"Give me post-midterm and give me another 2 to 3 percent down and I think the market will turn. So, I would not worry."

Why it makes sense for traders to hold some cash

by Joe Fahmy

4 out of 5 stocks move with the general direction of the market.

The best traders such as Jesse Livermore and Gerald Loeb, believed that you should only be in the market when probabilities are in your favor, and that the LESS you are in the market, the better.

A common indicator that we are in a correction is when the general market (S&P 500) closes below its 10-week moving average because this is traditionally an area of institutional support.

U.S. companies repatriate over half a trillion dollars in 2018, but pace slows

by Sujata Rao, Ritvik Carvalho

Dollar repatriation in the July-September period fell to $93 billion, around half of second-quarter volumes and less than a third of the $300 billion or so sent home from January to March.

The repatriation bonanza followed new regulations that allowed the U.S. government to tax profits accumulated overseas, regardless of where the money was held.

Prior rules allowed companies to “defer” U.S. tax on worldwide profits unless they repatriated the money.

The change offered a powerful incentive to bring home some of the $3 trillion U.S. firms were believed to hold in jurisdictions ranging from Ireland to Switzerland, either in cash or in securities such as U.S. Treasuries.

Cold, Hard, Free Cash Is Your Most Potent Weapon

by Tim Melvin

If the stocks in your portfolio are getting pricey and you can’t find any new bargains to replace them, then that’s a flashing neon sign that now’s a good time to hold lots of cash.

On the other hand, when the market starts to look like an all-you-can-eat buffet and there are more good companies at great prices than you can afford, we are probably near a market bottom.

Are the world’s best companies selling at single-digit price/earnings ratios? Spend the cash.

According to Lipper data, investors moved a staggering $190 billion into money market funds (cash) in Q4 2018.

The last time investors fled risk assets in such large numbers was during the 2008 global financial crisis.

Your Most Powerful Trading Tool Is Cash

If you are struggling with your investing or trading the best thing you can do is clear the decks and go completely to cash.

By JAMES "REV SHARK" DEPORRE

If your stocks are dropping 10% when the indices correct 2%, index puts or shorts aren't a big help.

Often, we hold stocks simply out of inertia or emotional attachment. We must force ourselves to question our positions at times, and going to cash will force you to do that.
