this is what disgust me the most about "elite" culture in sg. Many so call study, data are used to back what they said and do. Yet what the outcome has clear disconnect from intended results:

- moe implement creative teaching method in primary school, the mathematics question are so hard to solve, end up pupils has to go for more tuition. I have seen some of the question, effectively, a P5/P6 student is asked to solve a simultaneous equation using reasoning - not using algebra. If moe can only copy method from world class countries, and unable to be creative and invent better method, how could they raise more creative pupils.

- HDB prices went up so high yet all the justification and reasoning to back them.

- PhD Engineer that talk about how solid is his modeling and analysis but when comes to actual implementation is not his problem because his use his analysis to back him and any issue is the implementation problem.

.. many many more...

this so call elite culture, is hardly going to change in near future....

2.5m unmarried Malaysians aged 25 above

KUALA LUMPUR, May 8 (Bernama) -- Some 2.5 million Malaysians aged 25 and above make up 16.7 per cent of the country's unmarried population.

The Population and Housing Census of Malaysia 2010 showed that this figure comprised 60.4 per cent men and 38.6 per cent women, said Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Senator Heng Sai Kee.

She told the Dewan Negara today that the average age of men marrying for the first time had dropped to 28, compared to 28.6 in 2000.

"For women, they marry at the average age of 25.7 compared to 25.1 in 2000," she said in reply to a question from Senator Datuk Boon Som a/l Inong who asked for the number of unmarried men and women in Malaysia and the reason for it.

Heng said the Fourth Malaysian Population and Family Survey conducted by the National Population and Family Development Board revealed that 32.1 per cent of respondents had never tied the knot.

She said of this number, 55.6 per cent were men and 44.4 per cent women. "According to 44.7 per cent of the male respondents, they didn't marry due to financial problems, others cite no suitable candidates (19.3 per cent), career (12.8 per cent), family commitment (6.3 per cent) and other reasons.

"Forty per cent of women said they did not marry as they have not found eligible suitors, while some mentioned financial problems (14 per cent), career (8.4 per cent), comfort in being single (8.4 per cent), family commitment (7.4 per cent) and other reasons," she said.

Heng said the ministry has no plans to set up a matchmaking agency or online matchmaking service as it was already being done by private companies, non-governmental organisations, religious bodies and even political parties.

“Where is Everybody?” by Joshua M Brown

The New York Times dredges up the open secret that no one is in the stock market anymore.

Nathaniel Popper plaintively lays out the statistics and then consults a handful of sources to understand what's going on...

The population is aging, disgusted, disillusioned, excluded from the best action and tired of the game overall. They are net sellers of $377 billion worth of individual bonds and stocks each year.

They will not be coming back until the HFT shit is banished and young companies begin listing early enough so that there's room to make money on their stocks.

They'll not be returning until the next generation gets some investable wealth and shows up unhindered by the ghosts of 2000 to 2008. It's gonna be awhile.

And that's where the volume went.

Japan faces 'extinction' in 1,000 years By Kyoko Hasegawa

Japanese researchers on Friday unveiled a population clock that showed the nation's people could theoretically become extinct in 1,000 years because of declining birth rates.

Academics in the northern city of Sendai said that Japan's population of children aged up to 14, which now stands at 16.6 million, is shrinking at the rate of one every 100 seconds.

Their extrapolations pointed to a Japan with no children left within a millennium.

What's the economic significance/implication of a country having a young population? by Carl Delfeld

I had to think quite a bit before responding. You often read about the connection between demography and investing. Gurus like Harry Dent focus almost exclusively on demographic trends to make their market calls.

In brief, here's my take on how a youthful population can affect the potential for economic growth of a country. More importantly for investors, what companies will likely prosper with this demographic wind at their back?

Younger people are just at the beginning of their consumer and investor life cycle's great fuel for upward growth of consumer spending in many areas over a long period of time.

A younger population means lower healthcare and other government retirement benefits, greatly relieving pressure on national budgets.

Younger people get married and have kids and this means a population growth spurt, a key part of the formula for economic growth and a sign of confidence in the future.

But I caution that having a youthful population is far from an automatic success formula. A country needs to have basic institutions in place, such as rule of law and an independent judiciary, good primary education and an open market economy.

Need proof? Many of the poorest countries in the world have a young population, but are mired in war, political instability and corruption. Mali, for example, has 47% of its population under the age of 14.

The Science of Overpopulation

It is no secret that our global population is continuing to grow, but does our planet actually have the room and resources needed for ‘seven billion plus’ people?

Sci-Show takes a look at the issues surrounding population growth from a historical and present day perspective.
