SS, merged your styles suggestion here. Since you talked about updating the look-n-feel previously in this thread. So, there's a better logical flow here.

Okay, there are a few things that I'll point out:

- phpbb styles (templates, themes, imagesets) are a pain in the arse to customize. I don't know what possessed the developers last time to make it so, but it's shit. For example, changing colours isn't as simple as just editing a stylesheet. You have to create gif files, get the colour gradients right, etc. It's a royal pain. I tried to do that after memphisb's request previously, and after working a bit on it, I decided that it wasn't worth my time.

- The phpbb community does provide several other custom-made styles which I can download and install immediately. However, new mods developed by the mods community (these provide extra features not in the default install) often only provide template changes for the default prosilver (and sometimes legacy subsilver) templates. That means that whenever I need to install a new mod, I need to make additional effort to read the codes and figure out what changes I need to make for these special styles, nd then test them as well. This is time/effort I'm unwilling to spend.

- For the logo, well, I'm not an artist, what can I say? :) However, this is the logo I use for my other web sites as well, and while Huatopedia remains parked under wookup.com, I'll stick to that. If / when it does spin off into its own domain in future, we can redesign it all we want. :)

So, in summary, as far as styles, themes and templates go, I'm not willing to put in too much time/effort into that because of the overheads involved. If it turns out that the current schemes turn off a lot of forum members, then I might think again about that; right now, I can't/won't spend the time/effort on it. Unless someone has a spare full time phpbb admin packed in a storeroom who wouldn't mind doing all that work. :D :D :D

Dear All,

We would appreciate any feedbacks that you might have on how we can improve the forum.

Winston

My feedback as follows, please:

1. Huatopedia is an informative, enriching and educational forum for investment as well as for other aspects of life.

2. There are a number of forum participants who not only selflessly sacrificed much of their time to share their valuable knowledge, investment skills, information and administrating the forum, but also generously share their investment views, market perceptions and daily market outlook with others. Their sacrifice and generosity are most commendable.

My suggestions, please:

Suggestion 1

Create a thread for brainstorming current investment opportunities.

Q: What is this thread, ‘Brainstorming Current Investment Opportunities’ for?
A: People who have potentially high-probability trading/investment ideas can post them here to share and to brainstorm with Huatopedia forum participants for mutual benefit.

Q: How does this thread, ‘Brainstorming Current Investment Opportunities’ work?
A: Take for eg: on Wednesday, 26.11.08, Mr A noticed that palm oil price which had fallen from July 2008 high to September 2008 low had been recently creeping up. He reasoned out that since the share price of palm oil related companies had fallen a lot already, they might start to rise, with the presence of other positive market indications.
With the existence of ‘Brainstorming Current Investment Opportunities’ thread, he put up a post of his observation and deduction that taking a long position on Wilmar, a leader in the palm oil sector, had a high probability of yielding profits.

Other forum participants could then post their views, their TA, FA and other knowledge of Wilmar and the palm oil industry.

Q: There is already a Wilmar thread. Why don’t just post there?
A: Members who don’t ‘play’ Wilmar are quite likely to skip this thread, or they may only read it when they are very free, probably at night after dinner because most of the time posts there are of reports. By then opportunities could be over.

Q: What topics to post in this thread?
A: Any topic. It can be on DBS or Wilmar or Gold or …

Q: Won’t it mess up the forum?
A: Forum Admin may need to have the extra work of shifting the posts after awhile to the threads under their titles.

Q: Won’t this thread be construed as influencing readers to take a position in a stock? If the consensus of opinion turns out to be wrong, won’t it be blamed for misleading readers?
A: Forum Admin may need to state some disclaimers.

Q: Are there other benefits for forum participants?

A:
1) With the ‘Brainstorming Current Investment Opportunities’ thread, people who do not have much free time, can zoom into this thread to read the day’s speciality investment opportunities, hot from the oven.

2) At present, people who post in the investment threads are mainly the more investment savvy ones. The ‘Brainstorming Current Investment Opportunities’ thread being for brainstorming, opens a window for less savvy investors to come forth to post their ideas.

3) The brainstorming will be educational for the less savvy investors. It also offers different perceptions to the savvy ones.

4) As this is a brainstorming thread, not an information thread, more of the savvy investors would feel more free to express their views, and more of the less savvy ones would feel less inhibited to express their 'look-like-not-so-clever' views.

5) This thread serves as an avenue for people to cross-check their potentially high-probability investment ideas quickly with others.

Q: Who will benefit?
A: All readers. Sometimes non-savvy investors may have great investment ideas.

Q: Will it be feasible to have a template to guide contributors?
A: A draft template as follows may be helpful, needs improvements though:

1. Proposition: Take a long position on Wilmar.

2. Reasons:

2.1. Palm oil price reached a high of >3000 in July 2008 and fallen to a low of …

2.2. Palm oil related companies’ performance correlated with...

2.3. Wilmar is this industry’s leader…

3) Technical Analysis Support:

4) Fundamental Analysis Support:

5) Other Supports:

6) Vested:

Q: Isn’t it a ‘cheapskate’ way of ‘fishing’ for investment tips and not doing your own homework?
A: Anyone who puts up a proposition for brainstorming has to have done some research, and/or made some intellectual observation and deduction. Contributions to the brainstorming are voluntary.

Suggestion 2

Have a Thread with tables for the counter-parties of trades done.

Q: How does the design of this thread look like?
A: A rough idea: Have some blank tables, eg the one below. Forum participants fill in the data of their trades. Admin may need to shift them according to alphabetical order.

I believe Admin will have a much better idea of the design for this thread, if deemed suitable.

Q: How does the table look like?
A: Something like as follows, may need improvements though.

Counter-Parties of Trade

S/N Stock Date Long/Short Lots Price Counter- Party Contributor Comments
1 Wilmar 26.11.08 Long 20 $2.45 Kim Eng Cherry Target:
Cut-loss:
2 Wilmar 27.11.08 Sell 15 $2.80 Phillip
3 Wilmar 27.11.08 Sell 5 $2.80 OCBC

(Admin: Help if Boleh! Table for above data Lost in the Post!)

Q: What for?
A: To help detect Funds’ activities in the market and also in certain counters.

Q: For what?
A: If eg, when we buy into a stock, a very high % of the counter parties are eg, MSCO, CSFB, we know these 2 funds are selling.

Q: Why need to use the forum to find out this info?
A: I don’t think the info of who are selling/buying how much is available to the retail investors.
One person’s own data is not enough for drawing a conclusion. If a high % of the forum participants are willing to contribute, we will have a bigger pool of data. This, though not really conclusive, is better than nothing.
As a matter of fact, throughout the months of April, May, June, July and August, whenever my friends bought into Sino-Enviroment, A very high % of the counter parties were MSCO and CSFB. The knowledge helped them to cut loss fast.

Q: Will the data be authentic?
A: Users have to use his/her own judgement.

Please ignore the above 2 suggestions if deemed unsuitable.

Hi Cherry,

Thanks for taking time to think about ideas and putting them down. You've put them across very clearly, so I think I have a good understanding of what you're looking for. So, here are my thoughts.

Suggestion 1 - Create a thread for brainstorming current investment opportunities.

The "issue" you've described is an inherent problem with a "single-dimensional" (for lack of a better word) tool like a forum. Basically today, our threads for discussions on investment/trading ideas generally come in these forms:

- individual stock topics ("Wilmar", "IBM", etc.)
- individual sector topics ("Real Estate", "Gold", etc.)
- generic topics ("Traders Thread", "Misc Investment Articles", "Huatopedia Squawk Box", "Short and Puts" etc.)

I don't think a single thread for investment ideas / brainstorming would work well, simply because the tendency for the thread to get really messy is extremely high. For example, a discussion on "bulk shippers" goes on, and someone else wants to talk about "banks". Then another guy comes up with "hey, look at these construction companies". The thread would end up like being extremely chaotic. I also do not like to see the moderators doing additional work in shifting topics and discussions around each week. It's not hard work, but it's work and every bit adds up.

I think the longer-term solution to that is "post-tagging". Just like blogs or images, you could, for example, tag your post wherever you post it, with a generic tag like "INVESTMENT IDEA". Then folks could just search for investment ideas using that tag.

The catch? Post-tagging is not available on phpbb. Hahahahahahaha....

The workaround, is if the forum members can agree on a unique keyword for all such posts and insert them into their posts of this nature. We can then use the existing search engine to search for posts with these keywords. Somewhat like pseudo-tagging. Not perfect, but it'd work. However, discussions will still not be consolidated, but rather, scattered in the various topics where the posts are made. It'd make searching for investment ideas easier though.

So, for example, anyone who's posting an investment idea could use the word "HUATAGREATIDEA". Then anyone who wants to search for these ideas can use the word in the searchbar...

So, that's practically how it could be done. It requires members of the community to all play the game though.

Suggestion 2 - Have a Thread with tables for the counter-parties of trades done.

Erm... I'm not even sure where you can get daily info on funds buying / selling. Or are you simply referring to the changes in interests of substantial shareholders which is disclosed in the SGX site? But anyway, technically, the issue is simple (but not elegant). You either need someone to "own" a counter and update his/her post regularly after receiving information from the "informants" (we can make him/her the owner of the first post of each thread), or anyone who has updated info could copy the data from the last post, add data to it, and paste it in their own post.

I'm against admin or moderators having to do extra work in helping to maintain the data - community members need to contribute their fair share of efforts. That's what communities are about. Long live socialism! :D :D :D

GR - Tks for the GREAT WORK on the market information above. It is very neat and comprehensive :)

I'm actually thinking of swapping its position with the Google Ad now. So, it'll be below the blue box, while the ad will go to the top. The reason is because that will provide space for 1 more box of tickers, so I can probably put European indexes there. Not sure how it'll look though. :D
