Today's ECB meeting was very relevant. Not because of the 75 bps hike, but because ECB members deliberately chose to keep excess liquidity elevated. And this policy response matters for the EUR amidst the energy crisis.

Lagarde says ECB rates to be lifted for ‘several meetings'

“We expect to raise interest rates further over the next several meetings to dampen demand and guard against the risk of a persistent upward shift in inflation expectations”.

“Reducing inflation is the main contribution we can have to improve the economic situation”.

Money-market investors see the ECB delivering another three-quarter-point rate increase in October, with the deposit rate -- currently 0.75% -- rising beyond 2% by year-end.

A) The press release indicates the Governing Council doesn’t expect ‘‘to raise interest rates over the next several meetings’’ but only ‘‘to raise interest rates further’’: a much less specific reference to the hike sequencing being prolonged over time;

B) The press release now reflects an ECB assessing today’s stance as reasonably tight and moving there quickly: ‘‘With this third major policy rate increase in a row, the Governing Council has made substantial progress in withdrawing monetary policy accommodation.’’
