Lower new claims for unemployment benefits

The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits fell last week, pointing to underlying strength in the labour market.

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped 10,000 to a seasonally adjusted 222,000 for the week ended May 11, the Labor Department said on Thursday (May 16).

Economists polled by Reuters had forecast 220,000 claims in the latest week.
