US economy grows at fastest pace in two years

The US economy grew at the fastest pace in nearly two years last quarter, fueled by a surge in consumer spending.

Gross domestic product accelerated to a 4.9 percent annualized rate, more than double the second-quarter pace, according to the government's preliminary estimate yesterday.

That compared to an estimate of a 4.5 percent growth. The economy's main growth engine - personal spending - jumped 4 percent, also the most since 2021.

The core personal consumption expenditures price index, which strips out food and energy costs, stepped down to a 2.4 percent pace in the third quarter.

The primary driver of that resilience is the enduring strength of the job market, which continues to fuel household demand.

But should demand stay robust, it risks keeping inflation above the central bank's 2 percent goal and may warrant tighter monetary policy.

US construction spending increased in September but momentum is slowing as the factory building boom fades.

The Commerce Department said on Wednesday (Nov 1) that construction spending rose 0.4 per cent.

Data for August was revised higher to show construction spending surging 1.0 per cent instead of rising 0.5 per cent as previously reported.

Economists polled by Reuters had forecast construction spending climbing 0.4 per cent.

US MANUFACTURING contracted sharply in October

US MANUFACTURING contracted sharply in October after showing signs of improvement in prior months as new orders and employment slumped, likely reflecting strikes by the United Auto Workers (UAW) union against Detroit’s Big Three car makers.

PMI dropped to 46.7 last month from 49.0 in September, which was the highest reading since November 2022.
