China - South China Sea

In the Trump era, we can’t rule out war between China and the US, whether over trade or security

Deng Yuwen says direct conflict is possible between the two powers – with their vastly different models – when distrust runs so deep. A Trump presidency may well send the two tumbling into a Thucydides trap

Trump’s chief strategist Steve Bannon defines the US-China relationship as confrontational and predicts a war on the South China Sea in the next five to 10 years.

Given the deep-rooted mutual distrust and structural contradictions between the two countries, it would not be too surprising if friction, and even small-scale military confrontation, occurs in the next 10 years.

In geopolitics, the two are out-and-out rivals, and the Diaoyu Islands, Taiwan and the South China Sea form the core of the confrontation.

China finishing South China Sea buildings that could house missiles - U.S. officials

By Idrees Ali

China, in an early test of U.S. President Donald Trump, has nearly finished building almost two dozen structures on artificial islands in the South China Sea that appear designed to house long-range surface-to-air missiles, two U.S. officials told Reuters.

Building the concrete structures with retractable roofs on Subi, Mischief and Fiery Cross reefs, part of the Spratly Islands chain where China already has built military-length airstrips, could be considered a military escalation, the U.S. officials said in recent days, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"China carrying out normal construction activities on its own territory, including deploying necessary and appropriate territorial defense facilities, is a normal right under international law for sovereign nations"

China apparently had installed weapons, including anti-aircraft and anti-missile systems, on all seven of the islands it has built in the South China Sea.

The officials said the new structures were likely to house surface-to-air missiles that would expand China's air defense umbrella over the islands.

The U.S. intelligence official said the structures did not pose a significant military threat to U.S. forces in the region, given their visibility and vulnerability.

China makes another jab at US in war of words over South China Sea

Advisory body spokesman bats away US criticism of China’s construction activities in contested waters, insisting they’re essential

The US Carl Vinson aircraft carrier strike group was reportedly patrolling in the waters last week.

And yesterday, a number of PLA Navy bombers, jet fighters and early warning aircraft flew east through international airspace above the Miyako Strait near Japan’s Okinawa Island, conducting exercises with a Chinese naval fleet in the area, Xinhua reported.

Japan plans to send largest warship to South China Sea, sources say

By Tim Kelly and Nobuhiro Kubo

Japan plans to dispatch its largest warship on a three-month tour through the South China Sea beginning in May.

"It will train with the U.S. Navy in the South China Sea"

Japan does not have any claim to the waters, but has a separate maritime dispute with China in the East China Sea.

The 249 meter-long (816.93 ft) Izumo is as large as Japan's World War Two-era carriers and can operate up to nine helicopters.

WHY BREXIT STRENGTHENS BEIJING’S HAND IN THE SOUTH CHINA SEA

As the Association of Southeast Asian Nations hits 50, it should ponder the fate of the European Union – the body that inspired its creation. But Hong Kong and Singapore have reasons to be cheerful

BY PHAR KIM BENG

The slow collapse of the EU – if that is indeed what we are witnessing – would encourage China that it could afford to ignore the two groups.

That while Asean and the East Asian Summit can “talk the talk” they cannot “walk the walk”.

Brexit, in this sense, gives China an advantage in its disputes with neighbours over the South China Sea. It will encourage China to be patient.

If Asean is a project that may fail, let it fail on its own, Beijing will reason.

When Asean finds it cannot cohere or ally with the US and Japan, it will be left with no option but to return to China’s fold.

If Asean cannot come together as a group, China will be able to follow a strategy of “divide and conquer” by persuading each claimant in the South China Sea disputes to climb on board, one by one.
