Economists at Bank of New Zealand have lowered their Fonterra milk price forecast to NZ$3.80 for 2015-16 from NZ$4.30 most recently. "

This is part of a wider downward revision to milk price forecasts over recent months such has been the hit from factors like ongoing global milk supply expansion, higher than anticipated WMP inventory in China raising questions of underlying demand, USD strength and EUR weakness, the extension of the Russian trade ban on many Western dairy products, and general weakness in commodity markets and associated rise in risk aversion," they wrote in a note.

Fonterra is due to provide an update on its current NZ$5.25 forecast following its board meeting on 7 August.

New Zealand Cuts Interest Rate, Sees “Further Easing”: Kiwi Falls By Shuli Ren

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand cut its benchmark interest rate for the third consecutive time to 2.75%.

The central bank is worried that falling dairy prices and China slowdown are hitting activities outside the agriculture sector. It slashed its GDP forecast for the year ending next March to 2.1% from 3.2%, and for the year ending March 2017 to 2.5% from 3.1%.

Given the central bank’s growth outlook, it is not surprising that today’s policy statement repeated the phrase from July’s meeting that “some further easing seems likely.”

“The RBNZ suggested that rates will be reduced back to the record low of 2.5% seen during the global financial crisis at the next meeting in October,” wrote Capital Economics‘ Paul Dales.

But he thinks “the RBNZ is [still] underestimating the size and duration of the slowdown, which is why we believe that interest rates will fall to 2.0%.”

The kiwi slipped after the announcement, down almost 1.5% early this morning. The kiwi was trading at 0.6270 recently. Overnight, the iShares MSCI New Zealand Capped ETF (ENZL) rose 0.5%.

Nation of Debt: New Zealand sitting on half-trillion-dollar debt bomb

New Zealand now owes almost half a trillion dollars in debt - and a growing chunk of it belongs to ordinary households, mainly borrowing to buy property. In the start of a week-long series Tamsyn Parker spells out the problem.
