Bomb blasts hit Nigerian bid for credible elections by M.J. Smith

Nigerians voted in large numbers Saturday in the first of a series of key elections in Africa's most populous nation, but deadly bomb blasts cast a shadow over the country's bid to hold credible polls.

At least 13 people were killed in the explosions and dozens of others were wounded, but the toll was likely to rise because details remained unclear from the blasts on Saturday.

Presidential elections are set for April 16, while governorship and state assembly ballots will be held April 26.

"There are also very few cases of ballot box snatching -- evidently by politicians still living in the past," he told journalists.

A number of incidents were reported in the Niger Delta -- notorious for election fraud and violence in the past -- including the hijacking of vote materials and personnel in one troubled area of Bayelsa state, an electoral official said.

Hundreds arrested after deadly riots in north Nigeria

KADUNA, Nigeria (Reuters) - Police in northern Nigeria have arrested hundreds of people after deadly protests in opposition strongholds in the mostly Muslim north following President Goodluck Jonathan's election victory.

At least 80 people have been killed in major cities alone, hundreds injured and thousands displaced by the violence after Jonathan won Saturday's vote. His rival, northerner and ex-military ruler Muhammadu Buhari, says the result was rigged.

Nigeria leader says unrest recalls civil war build-up by Ola Awoniyi

President Goodluck Jonathan said Thursday unrest after his election recalled the build-up to Nigeria's civil war, while the International Criminal Court's prosecutor said he would probe the violence.

Jonathan also pledged that next week's governors' polls would go on as planned, but the electoral commission announced later that the vote would be delayed by two days in two states -- Bauchi and Kaduna -- over security concerns.

Curfews and military patrols have largely restored calm after rioting broke out in northern Nigeria and quickly spread across the region, following southerner Jonathan's win over northerner Muhammadu Buhari at the weekend.

A Nigerian rights group says more than 200 people were killed, but authorities have refused to provide a death toll, fearing it could provoke reprisals. The number of displaced has risen to 60,000, the Red Cross says.

More than a million people are estimated to have lost their lives during the 1967-70 conflict which came as eastern Nigeria tried to secede and establish the republic of Biafra.

Buhari, an ex-military ruler, has alleged rigging, but he has disassociated himself from the rioting.

Some analysts have said that the upcoming governorship elections could hold the most risk of violence. Governors wield significant power in Nigeria, granted huge budgets thanks to oil revenue.

Nigeria's 150-million population is roughly divided between Muslims and Christians and includes some 250 ethnic groups. The north is mainly Muslim while the south is predominantly Christian.

The north has long been economically marginalised compared to the oil-rich south, fuelling resentment and divisions that last weekend's elections helped expose.

Jonathan was vice-president to northern Muslim Umaru Yar'Adua, succeeding him as president in May 2010 when he died before the end of his first term and prompting bitterness in sections of the north over its loss of power.

And would it affect the price of oil ?

Nigerian city attacks kill at least 28 by Aminu Abubakar

Coordinated bomb attacks targeting security forces and gun battles have killed at least 28 people and spread chaos in Nigeria's second-largest city, with bodies littering the streets on Saturday.

A 24-hour curfew was also imposed on the city of Kano, the largest in Nigeria's mainly Muslim north and which exploded into violence on Friday evening, with eight police and immigration offices or residences targeted.

The main newspaper in Nigeria's north reported that a purported spokesman for Islamist group Boko Haram had claimed responsibility for the violence, saying it was in response to authorities' refusal to release their members from custody.

Some 20 huge blasts could be heard in the city as a suicide bomber attacked a regional police office and a car bomb rocked the outside of state police headquarters after the attacker fled and was shot dead, police sources said.

A number of other police posts were targeted, including a secret police building, as well as immigration offices.

Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation and largest oil producer, is roughly divided between a mainly Muslim north and predominately Christian south.
