i oso duno what to say....

apparently, now germans and french are saying they didn't subscribe to bombing raids...they said they signed up to protect the libyan civilians, which is what resolution 1973 is all about..

but today, both obama and cameron, openly declared they would like to see gadaffi deposed..obama made this statement in his state visit to chile and cameron stated this in parliament today, both admitting that this is NOT what resolution 1973 is about..

dangerous world we are living in.. when powerful men can unilaterally decide the fate and lives of other countrymen.... some have become so very judgemental.... :?

I was watching the CNN news of a govt spokesperson - US emphasised that they are not targeting Qaffadi in particular. They simply suspect that the Presidential compound is a command centre. They do regret if Qaffadi is caught in any of the bombings. What nice way to put it; they framed it that they go out of their way; risking their (US & NATO) citizens lives to protect Libyan citizens; noble words! - politicians are really good at changing one's perspectives.

1) one will first see the suffering of one's loved ones

Lockerbie Bombing

Pan Am Flight 103 was Pan American World Airways' third daily scheduled transatlantic flight from London Heathrow Airport to New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport.

On Wednesday 21 December 1988, the aircraft flying this route—a Boeing 747–121 named Clipper Maid of the Seas—was destroyed by a bomb, killing all 243 passengers and 16 crew members.[1]

Eleven people in Lockerbie, in southern Scotland, were also killed as large sections of the plane fell in the town and destroyed several houses, bringing total fatalities to 270. As a result, the event has been named by the media as the Lockerbie bombing.

On 24 February 2011, Libya's former justice minister Mustafa Abdul Jalil claimed that Muammar Gaddafi had personally ordered the Lockerbie bombing.[2]

Do you know what's going on here ? When did the enforcement of a "No-Fly zone" include targeting Civilians ?

Russia says NATO may be targeting Gaddafi

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia's Foreign Ministry said on Sunday that NATO could be targeting leader Muammar Gaddafi and his family, after Libyan officials said his youngest son and three grandchildren were killed in an air strike.

Russia has been an outspoken critic of the Western military alliance's intervention in Libya.

Earlier, Russian parliament member Konstantin Kosachev told Interfax news agency the attack was proof the coalition was not protecting civilians, as mandated by the United Nations.

"We have serious doubts about statements by the coalition members that attacks on Libya are not intended to physically eliminate Gaddafi and his family," the ministry said in a statement.

NATO denied targeting Gaddafi or his family in the Saturday evening bombing, but said it had launched air strikes on military targets. Libyan officials said there had been an "assassination attempt."

Libyan government spokesman Mussa Ibrahim said Gaddafi's youngest son Saif al-Arab, 29, was killed in the attack along with three of Gaddafi's grandchildren.

Russia's Foreign Ministry echoed its plea of a week ago for an immediate ceasefire and the "beginning of a political settlement without any preconditions."

"Moscow is treating the reports about civilian casualties with growing concern," it added.

The Libyan rebels and NATO have rejected Gaddafi's offer for a ceasefire, saying it lacked credibility.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has criticized the Western countries enforcing a no-fly zone over Libya and said they have gone beyond the limits of a U.N. Security Council resolution designed to protect civilians.

Russia holds the power of veto as a permanent member of the Security Council but abstained in March in a vote on a resolution authorizing force to protect civilians.

Obama 'overruled lawyers' in Libya war debate

President Barack Obama overruled two senior government lawyers in deciding that he had the authority to continue US military operations in Libya without Congressional approval, The New York Times has reported.

In reaching his conclusion Obama rejected the opinions of Jeh Johnson, the Pentagon general counsel, and Caroline Krass, the acting head of the Justice Department?s Office of Legal Counsel, The Times reported late Friday, citing unnamed officials familiar with the deliberations.

Johnson and Krass both told the White House they believed that US military activity in the NATO-led air war over Libya amounted to "hostilities."

Under the 1973 War Powers Resolution (WPR), a president has 60 days to get authorization from Congress -- which under the US constitution has the authority to declare war -- for a military deployment. Failing that, the Resolution sets a further 30 days to withdraw US forces from harm's way.

Obama however agreed with two other top government lawyers -- White House counsel Robert Bauer and State Department legal adviser Harold Koh -- who said the US military action in Libya did not amount to "hostilities" because it was in a support role.

The White House said it would not comment on the Times report, but spokesman Eric Schultz described the deliberations as "a robust process."

The WPR "has been subject to intense debate since it was first enacted in 1973, and even critics of the administration's position concede the legitimacy of different points of view," said Schultz, adding that "there was a full airing of views within the administration."

He said the White House would not discuss the internal process in which Obama receives legal advice, but said: "It should come as no surprise that there would be some disagreements, even within an administration, regarding the application of a statute that is nearly 40 years old to a unique and evolving conflict."

Reports of internal disagreements, despite being downplayed by the White House, are certain to fuel the building political row in Washington over the US role in NATO's Libya mission, and claims in Congress that the president overstepped his powers in ordering the conflict.

That Obama is reported to have overruled a top Pentagon lawyer will also likely add to speculation of differences of approach on some national security issues between the White House and the Defense Department -- key figures including Defense Secretary Robert Gates were seen as skeptical of US intervention in Libya from the outset.

The White House on Wednesday made their case for participating in the NATO-led assault on Moamer Kadhafi's forces in a 30-page report to lawmakers.

The document was compiled after Republican House Speaker John Boehner sent a scathing letter to the president warning that US operations would be illegal come Sunday because they lacked formal congressional approval.

"US forces are playing a constrained and supporting role in a multinational coalition," the White House report said, noting that the use of force was being used solely to protect civilians, enforce a no-fly zone and an arms embargo.

A senior administration official added: "we are not engaged in any of the activities that typically over the years in war powers analysis has been considered to constitute hostilities within the meaning of the statute."
