Libyan Sovereign Wealth Fund

We often ridicule sovereign wealth funds, the huge investment funds controlled by governments. They're among the worst investors in the world. We've documented their follies for years.

The Libyan sovereign wealth fund is about to make an investment that is surely worth nothing. According to UniCredit Chairman Dieter Rampl, Libya is interested in the bank's 7.5 billion-euro capital raise…

"UniCredit is working to take the necessary steps to allow the Libyan shareholders to take part in the capital hike," Rampl said at a conference this week.

UniCredit also raised money from Libya in 2008 after suffering losses from mortgages (shares were around 5 euro… They're trading for less than 73 cents today.)

Between the Libyan Investment Authority and the Libyan Central Bank, the country owns 7.2% of the bank.

We don't know what's dumber… That Libya wants to invest more money in UniCredit, or that the bank's chairman is bragging that Libya wants to invest.

Libya 7-month oil revenues hit $30.4 bln

Libya's oil and gas earnings for the first seven months of 2012 reached $30.4 billion dollars, with oil production running at 1.4 million barrels per day, the National Oil Company said on Tuesday.

"During the period January 1 to July 31, 2012, total production reached 302 million barrels or 1.417 million barrels per day," the NOC said.

It said revenues from oil and gas exports and taxes on foreign oil companies reached $30.4 billion with an average oil price of 110.5 dollars a barrel.

It said the figure was five percent higher than projected.

Libyan oil production, which was 1.6 million barrels per day before the conflict which toppled Moamer Kadhafi in 2011, resumed last September.

Earnings from oil exports account for more than 90 percent of Libya's income.

Romney aide: Obama tried to 'mislead' on Libya attack

Mitt Romney's campaign accused President Barack Obama's administration on Thursday of trying to "mislead the American people" over the attack that killed the US ambassador to Libya.

"We were initially told that this was a spontaneous demonstration in response to a video that was on YouTube," the top political adviser to the Republican White House hopeful, Eric Fehrnstrom, told Fox News.

"Now we're learning that it was a pre-planned terrorist attack, conducted on the anniversary of 9/11 and that it involved elements of Al Qaeda."

Obama "needs to be held accountable for his administration's attempts to mislead the American people about what happened in Benghazi," the Republican aide added.

NATO war crimes in Libya

“Background knowledge and historical context confirming Al-Qaeda and Western involvement in the destabilization of the Gadaffi regime, are also essential for making sense of corporate news narratives depicting the Libyan operation as a popular ‘uprising.’”
