Rogue US soldier 'kills 3' Afghans: official

An American soldier walked off his base in southern Afghanistan and opened fire on civilians on Sunday, reportedly killing three, Western and Afghan officials said.

The soldier was held afterwards, NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said in a statement.

The shooting comes after a series of incidents in which Afghan soldiers turned their weapons on American troops, killing six, after Korans were burned at a military base.

The Koran burning ignited days of violent anti-US protests in which some 40 people died, plunging relations between foreign forces and their Afghan allies to an all-time low and forcing US President Barack Obama to apologise.

NATO withdrew all its advisors from Afghan government ministries after two American officers were shot and killed inside the interior ministry, apparently by an Afghan colleague, following the burning.

Of the 60 NATO troops killed so far this year, 18 percent -- almost one in five -- have died at the hands of Afghan colleagues, including four French and an Albanian, as well as the six Americans.

The US leads some 130,000 NATO troops in Afghanistan in defence of the Karzai government.

no occupied land will ever truly enjoy peace and prosperity at the expense of the commoners.

the british surrendered to the japanese soon after they invaded our land on 14Feb1942, despite the fact that the british soldiers outnumbered the nips by 3 to 1 and the nips were almost out of ammunition. many british soldiers fled without putting up any real fight.

percival sold out on 15Feb1942, just one day later.

therefore, no occupying forces will ever defend the occupied lands. why should they risks their lives.

After Massacre, Army Tried to Delete Accused Shooter From the Internet By Robert Beckhusen

The military waited six days before releasing the name of U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales, accused of killing 16 Afghan civilians earlier this month.

One of the reasons for the somewhat unusual delay: to give the military enough time to erase the sergeant from the internet — or at least try to.

That’s according to several Pentagon officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity to McClatchy newspapers about the subject.

The scrubbed material included photographs of Bales from the military’s official photo and video distribution website, along with quotes by the 38-year-old sergeant in the Joint Base Lewis-McChord newspaper regarding a 2007 battle in Iraq “which depicts Bales and other soldiers in a glowing light.”

Billions in cash smuggled out of Afghanistan every year By Sara Sidner and Mitra Mobasherat

"It's hard to estimate exactly how much is going out of Afghanistan, but I can tell you in 2011, 4.5 billion was (flown) out of Afghanistan," said Khan Afzal Hadawal, deputy governor of the bank of Afghanistan.

That is just what is moving out of the Kabul airport. It is estimated $8 billion in cash was lugged out of the country last year by car, private jets and border crossings. That is almost double the entire country's budget for 2011.

The government is trying to stop the outflow of money to other countries and encourage investment in Afghanistan. It has capped the amount of cash that can be taken out of the country at $20,000.

Afghan developer, Haji Hafizullah Caravan have made a huge investment in the capital, Kabul, constructing large self-contained communities complete with mosques, schools and hospitals. The idea is to make people feel safer by creating a tiny city within a city.

The price per apartment starts at $70,000.

NATO air strike kills six children: Afghan officials by Sardar Ahmad

A NATO air strike killed a family of eight, including six children, when it hit their home in eastern Afghanistan, local officials said on Sunday.

Saturday night's incident in Paktia province threatens to further sour already shaky ties between President Hamid Karzai and his Western backers and will likely enrage Afghan civilians weary of years of bloodshed.

"Eight people, a man, his wife and six of their children, are dead," local government spokesman Rohullah Samoon told AFP.

"It was an air strike conducted by NATO. This man had no connection to the Taliban or any other terrorist group."

Millions lost in Afghan reconstruction: US watchdog

Millions of dollars in US funds have been lost due to poor planning and workmanship in projects to help rebuild Afghanistan and billions more could be at risk, a US watchdog said Monday.

The report by the special inspector general for Afghanistan, John Sopko, warned that handing over security to Afghan forces as the US withdraws its troops would also likely balloon the costs of US-funded aid schemes.

Seven British Royal Marines arrested in Afghan-related murder probe

British military police on Thursday arrested seven members of the elite Royal Marines on suspicion of murder in Afghanistan in 2011, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced.

"The incident followed an engagement with an insurgent -- there were no civilians involved," said an MoD spokesman.

The investigation will now be conducted by the Service Justice system, which handles offences committed by British service personnel overseas, added the spokesman.

"These arrests demonstrate the department and the Armed Forces' determination to ensure UK personnel act in accordance with their Rules of Engagement and our standards," said the MoD statement.

The department said it would not be releasing any more information about the arrests, but vowed to conduct an internal review "to identify lessons learned.

"The nature of that review will reflect the developments in and, in due course, the outcome of the investigation," it added.

The Royal Marines, or "green berets", were formed in 1755 as marine infantry for the Royal Navy and have a reputation as some of the toughest military professionals in the world.

Britain still has some 9,500 troops in Afghanistan, all of whom are due to leave by the end of 2014.

Some 433 British personnel have been killed in the country since the start of the operation against the Taliban in 2001.

Prosecutors in April decided not to charge a British soldier with the murder of an Afghan man who had been digging near a military base in Helmand.

Duane Knott, a member of the Territorial Army volunteer reserve force, was investigated after shooting the man who he mistakenly believed was laying booby-trap explosives.

The Service Prosecuting Authority, set up to conduct independent prosecutions of military personnel, concluded there was no "realistic prospect of a conviction in this case."

US army contractor in hot water over Afghan video

A private security company working for the US government in Afghanistan is in hot water, after a video surfaced allegedly showing several of its employees drunk and on drugs, US broadcaster ABC reported Wednesday.

The video posted on the website of ABC, purportedly taken at an operations center belonging to US defense contractor Jorge Scientific, shows men with nude torsos, downing vodka shots and wrestling with each other.

Another man, identified as the medic of the group, is shown in a dazed state after shooting up with Ketamine, a strong anesthetic.

Contractors working for the US Army are banned from the use of alcohol and drugs.

The cell phone video, shot earlier this year, was provided to ABC by two former employees of the company, Jorge Scientific, who have filed a lawsuit against it.

"They endangered Jorge employees, the US mission, and US military personnel," claims the lawsuit, obtained by ABC.

The two men filing the suit worked as armed security officers in Kabul, as part of a $47 million contract the company had, to train Afghan police in counter-insurgency.

They told ABC they quit in disgust and out of fear their own safety was at risk due to the behavior of their colleagues.

In a statement, Jorge Scientific -- which has won almost $1 billion in US government contracts -- said it had taken "taken decisive action to correct the unacceptable behavior of a limited number of employees" and hired an independent investigation team, to carry out a probe.

An unspecified number of employees, including a former senior executive and "several others mentioned in the complaint" no longer work for the company, it said.

The Pentagon takes "all allegations of inappropriate behavior by contractors and service members very seriously," Commander Bill Speaks, a spokesman, told AFP.

The US Army's Criminal Investigation Division was looking into the allegations, he added, but declined to provide any details.

According to ABC, at least one US Army major -- a female -- regularly joined the parties and engaged in sexual activities at the company's facility.

Almost 114,000 contractors worked for the Pentagon in Afghanistan as of July 1, more than the 90,000 US soldiers deployed there, according to official statistics.
