Why China stoking up anger over South Korea missile system is doomed to fail

Encouraging boycotts of South Korean goods won’t stop Seoul deploying the defence shield, but will sour an economically valuable relationship, observers say

The effectiveness of the measures is questionable given China’s heavy reliance on Korean components to support its manufacturing industry

Less than 5 per cent of South Korea’s exports to China are consumer goods – the easy target for Chinese boycotts. Most are raw materials and manufacturing components and equipment.

The Korean International Trade Association said that if China were to continue with its “unofficial” sanctions, the economic losses for South Korea would be, at most, US$14.76 billion, or 1.07 per cent of GDP.

US threat to strike North Korea is ‘aimed at Beijing’s ears’

Analysts say tough talk from US secretary of state is likely rhetoric meant to pressure China into curbing Pyongyang’s nuclear programme

The Sino-North Korean Mutual Aid and Cooperation Friendship Treaty, still valid until 2021, remains a concern for Beijing in the unlikely case of a US military strike.

The treaty, first signed in 1961 and renewed in 1981 and 2001, stipulates that one country must immediately take military and all other necessary measures to oppose any country or coalition of countries that might attack either nation.

Here’s an obscure thing hedge funds are buying because of the North Korea nuclear risk

by Evelyn Cheng

Hedge funds are snapping up insurance against a South Korean default as the nuclear threat from North Korea appears to grow.

As measured by South Korea's five-year-default swap, the cost of protection against the country's inability to pay back loans leaped Tuesday to its highest level since July.

President Donald Trump tweeted Tuesday morning that a trade deal between the U.S. and China will be more favorable to Beijing if it can put pressure on North Korea.

Trump also tweeted that "North Korea is looking for trouble" and that the U.S. is ready to solve the problem without China if necessary.

Navy SEALs prepared to take out Kim Jong Un

Recently, China has moved approximately 150,000 troops to their border with North Korea, which some foreign policy experts believe is an attempt to leverage pressure on madman Kim Jong Un to stand down.
