Investideas: Why are you using this nick and what does it mean?

Very easy question, this is my last name.

InvestIdeas: What can you tell us about your background?

I am still a student, studying Physiotherapy which is in the medical industry.

InvestIdeas: How long have you been investing / trading?

I started exploring personal finance stuffs when I was around 18-19. The first book that started me thinking, was “Rich Dad’s Guide to Investing” by Robert Kiyosaki, the author of “Rich Dad Poor Dad”. Ironically, I did not read his first book, the “Rich Dad’s Guide to Investing”. It was all I need to introduce me to the investment world.

I remember he talked about different investment vehicles like stocks/bonds/financial derivatives, real estate and your own business.

I paper trade for around 2+ years and in 2007 Feb I fired my first bullet with my personal savings over the years. Long story short, I have around 2.5 years of paper trades and 3.5 years of real investment experience.

InvestIdeas: What is your Investment Strategy?

My investment strategy has changed and adapted according to my personal needs throughout the years. I started off with value investing. Gained knowledge from investment blogs like “Eight percent per annum: Value investing in Singapore stocks”, “extraordinary profits” and Musicwhiz’s blog.

With the help of investopedia, it helped me better understand value pararmeters better, their advantages and limitations. I have also read all of Buffett’s partnership letters when he first started out and “The Intelligent Investor” from Benjamin Graham. All the above has helped me form my foundation in investing as a whole.

To further improve, in 2008-2009, I explored Technical Analysis. It forms the basis for my buy and sell decision on price action. It is also a diagnostic tool to detect what the BigBoys are doing through high volume action and past price action.

As of now, my buy entries have improved over time with the help of both 80% FA and 20% TA. However, my selling decisions are lousy as usual. Anyway, it is not always possible to get the timing right when the market is at it’s euphoric mood.

InvestIdeas: What are your favorite books on trading/investing?

1) Security Analysis (Very technical but interesting)
2) Reminiscences of a Stock Operator (Very interesting book, described the emotions and ups and downs on the life of Jessie Livermore, a trader’s life.)
3) Warren Buffett partnership and Berkshire shareholder letters. (Over the years, one would have noticed how Buffett has adapted to changing market conditions and evolved as an investor. He is a lot more sophisticated than you think.)
4) I also hope to pick up Option Trading from J.L. Lord when I have a bigger account size. He has written 4 books in total. The best is “One strategy for all markets”. Sounds good heh?

Investideas: You have a very special nick. Why are you using this nick and what does it mean ?

The nick, Chiron, is a Greek Mythological character. No special reason behind my choice of this nick.

Investideas: What can you tell us about your background ?

Engineering graduate from NTU. Currently working in the semiconductor industry,

InvestIdeas: How long have you been investing / trading ?

My trading career started after I got my first job. Been a decade, time flies! Certainly time and tide waits for no man.

InvestIdeas: What is your Investment Strategy ?

When I first started out, being a greenhorn, I relied on tips from friends, broker. At that time, IPO market was also red hot due to the crazy NASDAQ run up in 1999 – 2000.

After that I moved to use FA to guide me through the market. However, after the recent severe bear market, I picked up TA to supplement my FA. Right now I use FA to screen out the good counters and TA to determine my entry/exit points.

This week, we are very please to introduce sidney ..

Investideas: You have a very special nick. Why are you using this nick and what does it mean?

Sidney is my Christian name. It has no specific meaning, although people remember me more easily as my name syncs with Sydney.

Investideas: What can you tell us about your background ?

By all counts, I’m a late bloomer in almost every aspects of life. I do not belong to the generation of catching spiders although I remembered that one of the most happy times during childhood, is catching fighting spiders and placing them in match boxes with a leaf. Anyway, I do not need to go very far to catch them. My living room had them. EEKKSss.

I was educated in UniSim and graduated in Oct 2010. Looking back, this was probably my greatest achievement. I am proud of being self-sufficient to put myself through. But If you recall the fable of “7 years of feast followed by 7 years of famine”, this is how I felt at the end of every semester when I had to PAY the school fees.

Quite coincidentally, I was “retrenched” the day I knew I was going to graduate. I left the financial industry for a few months, enjoyed a few moments of rest (although no real peace of mind) and re-joined my previous boss when they needed people back.

I almost did a 720 degrees career change. In hindsight, luckily I didn’t. I realised my weakness lies in not having focus in delivering true value to the organisation, rather than losing interest in the financial industry.

I am resolved to take CFA this Dec with a peer. I decided it because during the period of being retrenched, I realised how vulnerable I was. For every Sidney that can do the job, there were a few thousands more who wanted the job and can probably do it better than I could. It lead me to thinking about what value means to an organisation. If you do not have specialised experience and know-how, you are easily dispensable. Luckily i have another friend to study together, especially for people like me with 60% willpower most of the time.

InvestIdeas: How long have you been investing / trading ?

I started investing about 3 years ago. My first stock was in Popular Holding. I bought at the top of the market and am still holding it as a form of reminder. Mistakes are good teachers if we learnt the lesson. Otherwise, we’ll keep paying school fees – until we learnt.

InvestIdeas: What is your Investment Strategy ?

I remember the initial stage when I first got acquainted with investing. I would just blah blah all sorts of investment theories which I had learnt or read about. Now, I think the best way to learn a craft, is to first listen and observe…………

Investideas: You have a very special nick. Why are you using this nick and what does it mean ?

My friends used to call me uncle when I was in school. The nick is a combination of that and other parts of my name.

Investideas: What can you tell us about your background ?

I graduated in from NUS Engineering in 2002. I am currently working as a market research person in the Oil & Gas industry. I am currently in my early 30s and I am married with one baby .

InvestIdeas: How long have you been investing / trading ?

I began investing in 2003, in the US stock market. It was a case of me doing what I know and I thought the best fishes were in the US market at that time. I actually followed the Motley Fool and their recommendations. I eventually realised that their recommendations were a bunch of crock but some of their boards have good information, if you have the time to sift through the enormous volume of posts there to find things you are interested in. I also picked up my knowledge of financial measures from their site so its not a total waste of my time. I got into the Singapore market in 2008 as the markets tanked and I started looking for something with less currency risk and closer to home.

InvestIdeas: What is your Investment Strategy ?

None really. Over the years I have learned to look out for the various attributes of a business, and to understand how they earn their keep rather than analysing a lot of ratios, rate of returns etc. This is also partially driven by my lack of skill with regards to analysing accounting statements.

But more often its because of my belief that you need to understand whether a business is a good (or at least reasonable one), to put their other things into context (e.g. a huge cash pile would be useless if left to a spendthrift management).

Investideas: You have a very special nick. Why are you using this nick and what does it mean ?

My first name starts with letter “i”, last name is chew, so ichew

InvestIdeas: What can you tell us about your background ?

I got a local degree in Mathematics but ended up as a Programmer for 5 years before switching to a Logistics firm. I just started a new job on 01 February 2010.

InvestIdeas: How long have you been investing / trading ?

I think for about 10 years now but it is never the quantity but the quality. I think that I am still a very long long way to being good in investing / trading.

InvestIdeas: What are your favorite books on trading / investing ?

There are too many nice books to classify any as my favourite.

For FA, the “The Five Rules for Successful Stock Investing” by Pat Dorsey and Joe Mansueto is a good introduction.

For TA, I thought that the books by Darryl Guppy are very good introductions.

The CANSLIM book is not bad too.

For FA/TA Psychology, I thought both Mark Douglas’s “The Disciplined Trader” and “Trading in the Zone” are interesting, as well as Van K. Tharp’s “Trade Your Way to Financial Freedom”.

This week, we are very please to introduce Blackjack ..

Investideas: You have a very special nick. Why are you using this nick and what does it mean ?

It came naturally to me, as I have been using this nick since my school days, on top of several others. I felt it was also quite befitting for an investment forum as it denoted what I thought about blackjack – A game of observation, skill, emotions and tons of luck. Blackjack actually holds many other meanings as well.

InvestIdeas: What can you tell us about your background ?

I have a Civil engineering degree from NUS. It was my intention to become a civil engineer since my younger days. Well, fate has it that I changed my mind and I signed on as a uniformed regular after I graduated instead. I am now in the financial industry, as an operations analyst for one of our 2 local SWFs.

InvestIdeas: How long have you been investing / trading ?

Since mid 2006. I didn’t have a clue back then, so I started off with unit trusts.

InvestIdeas: What is your Investment Strategy ?

I suppose investment strategy precludes trading. My style is closer to value-based than growth. Typically dividends constitute an important part of my consideration as I believe this component provides an underrated potential outperformance in the long term.

Another thing I look at is the sentiments at any point, which one can gather quite easily. The benefits of buying in doom and gloom is really remarkable, as long as one can reign in his/her fear.

InvestIdeas: What are your favorite books on trading/investing?

I don’t have any favourite books, though I try to read up on different views as much as possible.

InvestIdeas: What are your investment vehicles ?

Only SGX counters, none others for the moment.

InvestIdeas: What has been your best investment so far?

My best investment has got to be Longcheer, when I was still new to the market. I lost quite an amount on this, considering I did not have substantial savings to start with. (I just finished my tuition fee loans from uni back then)

Why was it the best? Cos I took in the lesson and was serious with my money later on, forming many important thought processes in the later stage. I had other lessons of less severity after that, but overall I must say it was a good 4 years till now. I feel I have walked away feeling much richer. (Both in terms of experience and pocket)

The markets are trend-less and I’ve been staying on the sidelines. The only positions that I have now, are some laggard stocks that I think are “undervalued” and has some positive catalyst.

2) Gold – US$1130; No Chinese lining up to buy gold coins ?

3) Soft Commodities are correcting. Expecting hard commodities to correct as well.

InvestIdeas: What can you tell us about your background ?

Computer Science, NUS grad, most memorable module is Accounting because I almost aced it, with a D
I supposed you now know why I got a D… Hee… and what is it with all the IT people? Eat full, nothing to do and analyze the stock market in this forum? Hee…

Working in Pharma, i think the same company as cif5k, but we never had the chance to be colleagues, he left before i join …

InvestIdeas: How long have you been investing / trading ?

First dabbled with stocks in Nov-2004. For the record, I’m already 90% liquidated now, with nett loss of low low double-digit thousands…

Now crazy about properties… planning to get the first investment property in 2010/2011…

Investideas: What is your Investment Strategy ?

My strategy is to try to estimate the intrinsic values of companies, which I am still quite bad at.

My old blog, which I dont update anymore is at: http://valueinvestmentonsgx.blogspot.com/

InvestIdeas: What are your favorite books on trading/investing?

My #1 idol is still Mr Buffet. In 2005/6, I printed all his annual newsletters and read them on the train. Very refreshing… especially like to read his mistakes! =p
