Interview with Members : greenhoney

This week, we are very please to introduce greenhoney ….

Investideas: You have a very special nick. Why are you using this nick and what does it mean ?

Its that since I am attracted to renewable energy solutions, I figured greenhoney would be a suitable nick for me

InvestIdeas: What can you tell us about your background

Well, I am a veterinarian working in a private practice and while studying, I was exposed to livestock farming and thus gained a few insights into into this industry. I came from a very conservative background in terms of investing.

Nonetheless, the 97 crisis is still etched clearly in my mind (I was still a student then) and the stories and pictures of people committing suicide is a big lesson for me to never speculate in shares. but rather to invest.

InvestIdeas: How long have you been investing / trading ?

Well I must admit that I am a newbie in this. While I have owned shares in a few pharmaceutical companies (since I prescribed their drugs) I never did much detailed research on the stock before buying.

So I would say that I became a more mature investor only since the last 4 years. that was only because I had to pay tonnes of money each time I filled up my car at the petrol station.

As I filled up my car in the station, i got really pissed off each time and it was then that I began reading and researching on why I had to pay so much for a commodity which I had taken for granted. It was then that a whole new world of peak oil and renewable energy was revealed to me. Since then, I have traded mainly in energy stocks.

InvestIdeas: What are your favorite books on trading/investing?

I have just recently finished a book by Niall Ferguson titled ‘The Ascent of Money‘ which I think is probably one of the best book I have read on economic history for quite some time. Other books like the Intelligent Investor by Ben Graham remains the cornerstone in my investment mantra.

InvestIdeas: What are your investment vehicles ?

I trade mainly in the US market but have some exposure to stocks in HK, SG and Malaysia (plantations)

InvestIdeas: What has been your best investment so far?

Investing in myself !

InvestIdeas: What has been your worst investment?

The worse ones was those I had bought during early 07 (there was a huge rally during Chinese New Year) and late 07 when everything was in a frenzy. I still keep those stocks as a reminder for me of the lessons I have learnt.

InvestIdeas: What advice do you have for a young / newbie who is just starting out ?

I am also a newbie but I guess from the lessons I have learnt, is that never be greedy and please do your DD before buying a stock. You cannot control the price of the stock but you must have control of yourself!

InvestIdeas: Are there any other non-investment related books that may have influenced your outlook on life

The Bible

InvestIdeas: Are you able to tell us a bit about your family ?

Married with 1 kid.
